融液から得られたiPP 単結晶の成長とその形態

Polymer single crystal gives us important information about the mechanism of crystal growth and formation of super structure. Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) forms rectangular-shaped single crystal from dilute solution, and n-alkan or atactic PP blend. In this study, we could obtain iPP single crystal from the melt at wide temperature range between Tc=115〜160℃. The morphology was observed bay phase contrast optical microscopy, AFM and TEM. X-ray diffraction was also carried out. the shape of single crystal changed with Tc. A rectangular crystal was obtained at high Tc=155℃. At Tc〜130℃, the width increased and the shape became a rhombic-like as shown in Figure 1. Temperature dependence of the shape of single crystal could be explained by the difference between the growth rates along a- and b-axes. It is supposed that the change of the shape is strongly related to the crystallization mechanism of iPP.
